Silo Songs, Square Peg Round Hole’s most recent collection of original music, shows a seismic shift in creative process from the band’s 2019 full-length album, Branches (National Sawdust Tracks). While Branches was an outward reach towards a hefty list of collaborators, Silo Songs is the result of the band’s three members locking themselves away in a converted silo next to the Mark Twain National Forest, deep in the farmlands of Missouri. Surrounded only by vast stretches of nature and the sounds of grazing cows, Square Peg Round Hole pursued a boldly DIY writing and recording process. Limiting themselves to basic technology like iPhone microphones, laptop speakers, and software instruments, forced the members to reach new levels of resourceful creativity. The rhythmic soundscape incorporates samples from a fidget cube, disassembled Rhodes keyboard that was in the process of being repaired in between live dates, and a library of audio files from previous projects that were chopped and manipulated in new ways. The result is an EP consisting of four new works that sound like Square Peg Round Hole at its core, but also showcase the extremes of their willingness to think outside the box.
